My name is Sam and I’ve been into long distance running for some time now. In 2006 a friend of mine convinced me to enter the London Marathon whilst we were walking The Pennine Way. In the ensuing years I got round two London Marathons and completed the Silverstone Half Marathon and the St Albans Half Marathon.
Then two things happened which turned my attention to triathlon. I watched a friend compete in the Vitruvian Half Iron Man event at Rutland Water, and was inspired by event and incredible challenge it posed. The other was watching the 2012 Olympic Triathlon and seeing the incredible athleticism of the Brownlee Brothers.
After being out of regular training for a year now (young kids and moving house / relocation) I decided it was time to get back in shape. I’ve entered a 10K race in July followed by a Sprint Triathlon in September.
As I set out on this journey I feel confident that I can nail the bike and running sections of the sprint, but the swim is going to be my biggest challenge. I’ve never been a strong swimmer and after a few nights in the local pool I’ve realised I’m in need of some expert instruction to help me with my front crawl technique, as at the moment I can only manage two lengths before feeling exhausted!
I want to use this blog as a place to capture my progress, training, nutrition and all of the highs and lows that go with it.
Having watched the coverage of the recent Iron Man World Championships I’ve set my sights on becoming an Iron Man within the next 10 years. We’ll see where I get to!
